VT/MT/PT LEvel II NDE Technician

Summary –

This job entails working in a fast-paced production environment. The VT/MT/PT Level II Technician will be performing calibrations, Nondestructive Tests, and evaluations for acceptance or rejection determinations according to written instructions and record results. These inspections are carried out on complex welded assemblies of plate, cast, and/or forged materials to assess the structural quality. Additionally, these inspections are carried out on turbine components to assess the current condition prior to the rehabilitation of the component.

 

Level II Technicians are qualified to set up and calibrate equipment and to interpret and evaluate results with respect to applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Level II Technicians are thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the method of NDT being used and should exercise assigned responsibility for on-the-job training and guidance of Assistants and Level I Technicians. Level II Technicians organize, and report results of NDT.

 

Responsibilities –

The employee is responsible to:

  • Perform complex inspection work in accordance with Voith documented procedures and work independently
  • Set up and calibrate nondestructive testing equipment
  • Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities using NDT methods of

inspection

  • Establish techniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations
  • Apply testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards and evaluate results
  • Interpret digital readouts, and visual indicators
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Complete documentation of inspections on reports, organize photographic documentation, make sketches/diagrams, document repair progress and report final test results
  • Perform specialized inspections
  • May instruct others
  • May perform inspection(s) for customer witness inspection
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by management
  • Interface daily with the management about work priorities and progress of projects
  • Actively participate in any assigned training programs, planning and strategy sessions
  • Work closely with quality team to identify and remove obstacles
  • Actively participate in safety initiatives, incident investigations, etc.    
  • May, at times work at heights on ladders and/or elevated work platforms
  • Other responsibilities may include operation of forklifts and overhead cranes (up to 15 Tons) and maintaining general cleanliness of work areas

 

Qualifications –

  • Education
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • NDT Level II Certification VT/MT/PT.
    • Extensive experience performing inspections on casting, forgings, and weldments using VT/MT/PT nondestructive tests.
    • Records of past certification tests must be available and auditable for use as part of Voith personnel certification process. Past grades must be 80% composite with no individual grade below 70%.
    • Must pass Voith written Specific and Practical test as deemed necessary by Voith Level III personnel.
    • When a previous examination was administered and graded by an outside agency and the outside agency issues grades of pass or fail only, on a certified report, then the pass grade will be counted as 80 percent for that examination.

Physical Demands –

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the key actions of job.

  • The employee is also required to talk and/or hear in an industrial setting (noise requires hearing protection). The employee is required to stand and walk in an industrial environment 8 hours per day. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms; lift; stoop, or crouch.
  • The vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and adjust focus.
  • Must pass be able to pass test such that their natural or corrected near-distance acuity in at least one eye can read a minimum a Jaeger J2 eye test for near Vision or equivalent type and size letter at the distance designated on the chart but not less than 12 inches (30.5 cm) on a standard Jaeger test chart. The ability to perceive an Ortho-Rater minimum of 8 or similar test pattern is also acceptable and possess acceptable color perception for NDE method(s) qualified.
  • The employee may be required to lift objects up to 60 lbs., climb ladders and perform other tasks related to an industrial environment.
  • The job may require travel.
