Supervisor of Engineering II

Summary –

The individual is responsible for technically excellent and timely design engineering.  Manage an engineering team engaged in the completion of all required work necessary to manufacture or purchase Hydro Turbine components to meet customer requirements and/or to initiate improvements to the products.  Provides supervision and mentorship other engineers and team members in the department, and gives guidance to solve routine engineering design problems.  The Engineering Supervisor is capable to be assigned as lead engineer for all projects and able to perform system and component engineering for rehab and new components.

Supervises –

Direct supervision over a team of Engineers engaged in hydro turbine engineering activities.

 

Responsibilities –

  • Manage (Plan/Direct/Develop/Appraise) a team of 4 to 8 professionals to carry out Design & Manufacturing Engineering to produce or procure the most cost effective components, fit for the functional requirements, in compliance with the project specifications.
  • Transfers engineering know how to other Engineering personnel.
  • Perform group personnel management functions: training, job descriptions, vacations, timekeeping, performance management, goal setting and communications.
  • Plan, organize, and complete project engineering activities according to the requirements of the master schedule.
  • Preparing/updating designs for customer projects (OTC).
  • Contributing to the Engineering team’s objectives for Process Improvement and Standardization
  • Participating in proposals (OTO) to prepare preliminary design proposals.
  • Technical project leadership from contract award through project completion.
  • Define sourcing and manufacturing strategies starting with OTO plan at the beginning of the project.
  • Operating CAD/CAE equipment to complete work assignments.
  • Collaborating to refine strategies for manufacturing, sourcing, logistics and installation.
  • Performing necessary design calculations (as required) by employing common engineering principles and using hand calculations, proprietary Voith design tools.
  • Creating 3D solid models of components and assemblies. 
  • Creating 2D drawings best suited for the manufacturing methods (independently or by collaborating with designers.
  • Reviewing and release engineering documents and Bill of Materials with other experienced engineers (engineer 2 or higher)
  • Using SAP to create BoMs (Bill of Materials) best suited for the manufacturing, sourcing, logistics and installation strategy.
  • Participating in and leading design reviews and FMEAs.
  • Provides dispositions of non-conforming materials, machined/fabricated components and assemblies, and installed/tested assemblies as to adequacy for use in consultation with other experienced engineers (engineer 2 or higher).
  • Participates in the creation of design schedules for project assignments.
  • Engaging vendors, manufacturing personnel, and field service personnel in defining manufacturing, installation, design solutions that reduce cost and risk.
  • Supporting the quality department with continuous improvement and problem solving activities.
  • Assisting Test Engineers during start-up and commissioning.  Evaluating test results and checking on guaranteed values.
  • Communicating with customers regarding their engineering design-related questions and concerns.
  • Taking an active role in troubleshooting and root cause analysis supporting senior and principal engineers.

 

Qualifications –

  • Bachelors of Engineering degree
  • Effective teamwork skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task based on business needs
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Typically at least 8 to 10 years of work experience in a function related to the hydro power industry with a proven track record of successful project execution.

  • The employee is also required to talk and/or hear in an office setting (noise level is low). The employee is frequently required to stand and walk in an office environment from 4-8 hours. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; lift; stoop, or crouch.
  • The vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and adjust focus.
  • The employee may be required to lift objects up to 50 lbs., climb ladders and perform other tasks related to an industrial environment.
  • The job may require travel.
