Supervisor II of Machining

Summary Statement

Supervises / manages the daily activities associated with the manufacturing machining department. Supervisor must have the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast paced large machinery union manufacturing environment with the ability to adapt to changing situations. In support of production control product scheduling, the machining supervisor assigns hourly personnel, establishes individual goals, monitors performance, schedules and conducts company wide and department developmental training activities and other administrative duties. Enforces operational policies and safety procedures and administers progressive discipline.


Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate departmental activities to fulfill Production Control needs at the start of each shift.
  • Practice time management with sufficient time devoted to making follow-up visits to your assigned reports at intervals determined adequate based on the product complexity.
  • Effective time management
  • Maintain applicable skill levels, staffing teams for full implementation of department productivity and utilization goals.
  • Scrutinize & problem solve
  • Maintain tooling, fixturing inventory and storage records
  • Maintain an open and cooperative relationship with all department(s) supervisors.
  • Engage your team in deriving and implementing solutions.
  • Challenge your team to continually improve the manufacturing process.
  • Conduct process & product specific development trainings
  • Train new department employees.
  • Maintain timekeeping, vacation, ea, ot, etc.
  • Conduct yearly performance appraisals of hourly personnel.
  • Continuous professional development


Qualification Requirements

  • Associates degree from machining trade school or journeyman machinist/tool and die maker papers preferred
  • Verifiable supervisory experience leading teams in a machining environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge and use of large machine and cutting tools
  • Complete & thorough knowledge of machining technologies
  • Ability to perform shop math calculations
  • Strong motivator and communicator with excellent organizational and leadership skills

Physical Demands

Employees in this position are regularly required to walk, stand and use hands to finger, handle or feel. They are frequently required to reach with hands and arms. They are required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employees are required to talk and hear in an industrial setting (noise level is can be high at times) and regularly required to lift 10 pounds and occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
