Mechanical Engineer II (York, PA)

Voith Hydro Inc. seeks a Mechanical Engineer II in its York, PA office. Responsibilities will include: preparing designs/modifications for full range of products, including projects related to turbine and generator components; developing 3D models and engineering drawings for project-specific large rotating machinery (e.g., hydro turbines and generators) using Solid Edge; developing measurement drawings to gather all pertinent information from existing parts to be refurbished and design modifications in line with standards, guidelines and existing boundary conditions where components shall be installed; performing engineering analysis by means of FEA, using Ansys or analytical methods to optimize design related to hydro turbines; managing documents using SAP ECTR Engineering Control System; working with Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Field Services to support implementation of design during all phases of the project; preparing key mechanical engineering instructions and reports; participating in standardization efforts to improve technical solutions and ease of manufacture; conduct system-wide calculations and design of new machines or components; reviewing cost estimations and recommending appropriate action related to hydro turbine components including but not limited to: Turbine Runner, Shaft, Inlet parts, Guide and Thrust Bearings,  Wicket Gates, Wicket Gates Distributor Mechanism/ safety devices /bushings, Head Cover, Bottom Ring, Discharge Ring, Stay Vanes, Stay Rings and Draft Tube liners; investigating new concepts for practicality, economy, and operating efficiency and providing technical direction to drafters, designers, and lower-level engineers; disposing of non-conforming materials, machined/fabricated components and assemblies, and installed/tested assemblies; assisting tests of field engineers during start-up and commissioning; evaluating test results for turbine technologies; serving as lead engineer on projects; coordinating activities of design engineers and drafters.


Job Requirements

Must possess a Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline and 3 years of industry experience working in hydropower generation machine engineering. Requires 3 years of experience of the following:  Applying specialized techniques to mechanical and structural problems affecting large (at least 30 MW) hydro power equipment, providing complex engineering judgment about the adequacy and reliability of analyzed designs related to hydro turbine equipment modernization; supporting projects in offer as mechanical engineer, making basic calculations, design, modifications and writing technical proposals in a depth required for the proposal phase, for new and refurbished machines; utilizing industry and components standards knowledge, machine specifications, configuration, and technical drawings expertise; working with concepts supported by the domain of main turbine components and how to dimension it; using specific tools and mechanical engineering principles and disciplines including Fluid Mechanics, Materials Sciences, Machine Design, Mechanics of Materials, and Mechanical Vibrations; applying knowledge of welding, custom fabrication, machining,  mechanisms, and piping design; analyzing data collected before and after machine/components intervention; reviewing data (e.g. dimensions check sheets), evaluating (making drawings, spreadsheets, simulation) and devising strategies for shop manufacturing, field, suppliers based on data collected; working with CAD software programs performed in Solid Edge; working with stress and vibration, analyzing gathered data or simulating it, of new and refurbished equipment; and conducting structural calculations utilizing Ansys as well as other calculation mechanisms and tools, such as Excel calculations. Part-time local telecommuting permitted. 5% of domestic or international travel is required.
