Summary-    The Director of Manufacturing provides leadership to various manufacturing functions within VHY to maximize employee safety, quality, and production efficiency.  Directs and oversees all aspects of the manufacturing processes. Responsible for safety, quality, planning and directing the layout of equipment, workflow, assembly methods, workforce utilization, operational excellence, and lean manufacturing concepts. Familiar with a variety of heavy manufacturing concepts, practices, and procedures, especially welding, machining, blasting, painting and assembly. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading and implementing all aspects of Voith’s health, safety and environmental standards within the manufacturing facility
  • Responsible for producing high-quality, cost-effective products on schedule
  • Responsible for reducing manufacturing costs on an on-going and continuous improvement basis
  • Provides leadership, coaching and guidance to the following functions:
    • Manufacturing operations (preparation, fabrications, blast, paint, machining, and assembly)
    • Maintenance and facilities
    • Manufacturing engineering
    • Quality services
  • Responsible for the net contribution of manufacturing, including absorption, project budget performance, quality costs, cost center budget, salaried and hourly staffing, and utilization of the assets and worker centers.  All planning and forecasting requires detailed integration with marketing and sales, project management, procurement and engineering.
  • Responsible for labor relations and contract negotiations with the bargaining unit together with Human Resources
  • Responsible for optimization of the manufacturing processes and workflows through sound and sustaining lean manufacturing methods, industrial, and mechanical engineering principles and practices
  • Interacts with all functional areas, regional leaders, global leaders and other regional organizations to ensure best in class results and continuous improvement
  • Assures manufacturing is a provider and partner in fulfillment of Voith’s mission critical components and services
  • Fulfills all manufacturing OTO and OTC process requirements
  • Responsible for leadership and organizational development within manufacturing

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in operations or heavy manufacturing environment, preferably in energy/hydro power generation or associated industry
  • Previous management experience in a Union environment strongly desired
  • Excellent communication skills required
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong leadership skills to inspire team members through CI initiatives to achieve a greater level of safety, quality, productivity, and engagement
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills to detect gaps within complex processes
  • Meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, and product fulfillment
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines
  • Flexibility, openness, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment

Physical Demands

    • The employee is required to talk and/or hear in an industrial setting (noise level can be high at times). The employee is frequently required to stand and walk in an industrial environment from 4-8 hours. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, lift, stoop, crouch or climb a ladder.  The employee must be able to properly wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    • The vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and adjust focus.
