Summary

The Machine Shop Supervisor Development is a structured leadership-development position for an individual with strong technical aptitude and a passion to grow into manufacturing supervision. Over approximately 6 to 12 months, the individual will gain progressively greater responsibility through on-the-job training, coaching, and practical assignments, with the goal of becoming qualified to safely and independently lead a 3rd shift in the machine shop.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates fully in the Machine Shop Supervisor Development Program, including required training, practical assignments, coaching sessions, progress reviews, and qualification gates.
  • Develops working knowledge of machine shop workflow, machine capabilities, drawings, CNC and G&M code concepts, GD&T theory, routings, work-scope documentation, production priorities, and quality requirements.
  • Demonstrates visible safety leadership by reinforcing PPE, risk assessment, lockout/tagout, stop-work authority, hazard identification, and incident-escalation expectations.
  • Shadows experienced supervisors and progressively assumes responsibility for shift communication, turnover, manpower assignments, daily goals, production-status updates, and complete shift leadership.
  • Coordinates with Production Planning, Quality, Maintenance, Manufacturing Engineering, Programming, Material Handling, and other support functions to ensure employees have the information, materials, tooling, programs, inspection requirements, and support needed.
  • Monitors progress against shift priorities and responds to safety, quality, delivery, cost, staffing, equipment, and schedule concerns using fact-based problem solving and appropriate escalation.
  • Practices employee coaching, two-way communication, recognition, conflict response, and reinforcement of attendance, conduct, safety, quality, and production expectations.
  • Uses shop-floor management practices and department KPIs to demonstrate professionalism, fairness, confidentiality, accountability, initiative, and continued leadership growth.

Development Expectations:

  • Progresses from observation to assisted execution, supervised shift ownership, and independent shift leadership.
  • Applies feedback and provides evidence of learning through demonstrated performance, completed assignments, and documented observations.
  • Leads a scoped continuous-improvement assignment,
  • Learn to ask disciplined questions, assess impact, involve the correct resources, assign ownership, and follow actions through completion.
  • Completes monthly progress reviews and phase approval checkpoints with the assigned coach and program owner.
  • Demonstrates readiness to lead a shift independently before final qualification.

Requirements:

  • Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required. Technical education, apprenticeship training, machining coursework, or degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Peer leadership experience is acceptable. Manufacturing, machining, maintenance, fabrication, quality, or other industrial experience is preferred.
  • Technical aptitude and ability to learn machine shop processes, drawings, manufacturing documentation, quality requirements, and production systems.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing as a people leader and accepting progressively greater responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, listen actively, ask effective questions, and work constructively with employees and support functions.
  • Ability to organize work, adjust priorities, solve problems, and remain composed during changing shop-floor conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to work various shift schedules for required training and future shift-supervision responsibilities.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn applicable business, production, and reporting systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is required to communicate in office and industrial manufacturing environments where noise levels may vary.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods and may be required to reach, bend, stoop, crouch, or climb as appropriate for an industrial environment.
  • The position requires close, distance, peripheral, and depth vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee may be required to lift objects up to 50 pounds and perform other tasks related to an industrial manufacturing environment.
