For the Voith Hydro, Generator department, we are looking for:

Engineer I  
Mississauga, ON


Summary – This position is in the Generator Engineering team and is responsible for electro-mechanical design and analysis of new and existing hydro generator products as well as supporting Manufacturing and Field Operations. The Engineer also interfaces with customers and suppliers.


Responsibilities –

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of rotating machinery
  • Knowledge of Electro-Magnetic design of Large Hydro Power Generators
  • Prepares designs or modifications of full range of products plus handles special assignments where there is a lack of precedents. Projects can either be related to generator components.
  • Coordinates design preparation and develops design schedules for project type assignments.
  • Investigates new concepts for practicality, economy, and operating efficiency.
  • Reviews cost estimates and recommends appropriate action.
  • Coordinates design standardization programs.
  • Coordinate design practice to reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Prepares technical articles of advanced engineering principles, developments, and disclosures.
  • Attend customer sites to obtain field measurements of existing components and perform assessments. Develop recommendations, designs and implementations to enhance generator reliability and performance.
  • Reverse engineering: review existing parts without drawings or design information; determine functionality. Design repair procedures or new replacement parts.
  • Perform generator modernization projects, generator parts replacement and refurbishment (replacement of stator core, stator winding, stator frame, field poles, and excitation system).
  • Create Solid Edge 3D layout and 2D drawings of generator components, like stator coils, stator core, field coil and assemblies.
  • Support manufacturing process for stator windings.
  • Propose new tools, services and products to improve department productivity. Participate in the development and adoption of new engineering standards.
  • Assist test engineers during start-up and commissioning. Evaluate test results and check on guaranteed values.
  • Prepare reports for internal and external customers.                                                                                   

Principal Working Relationships:

  • Other Engineering Functions: To work closely with depending on projects.
  • Field Operations: To develop designs that conform to installation capabilities and work with during the installation and commissioning process.
  • Customers and Suppliers: To work closely with depending on projects.


Qualifications –


  • Graduate Engineer (Bachelor or Master’s degree) of an accredited school.

Special Knowledge or Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of machine design, stress analysis, fundamentals of electromagnetism, manufacturing process and skill to work effectively with computer-aided software. 

Prior Experience Desirable:

  • One (1) to five (5) years in hydro generator or other large rotating equipment. 

Other Qualifications or Requirements:

  • Professional registration desired
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others to obtain effective results & to conceive, plan, direct and delegate an extensive, complex engineering work
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
