Digital Governor Engineer - Automation 
Brossard, QC

The primary focus for this position is the digital governor and associated governor instruments.  Specialist Engineer who is expert in the design and implementation of Voith Digital Governor Systems.  This engineer will be responsible for confirming system engineering design parameters with the group experts, component engineering, modeling of excitation systems, parameterization of software, and factory/field testing.


The main responsibilities of the Governor Engineer - Automation are:




  • Implementation of Voith Hydro governor controls in both new plant and rehabilitation environments.  Specific functions include:
    • Confirming System Engineering parameters.
    • Making system electrical schematic drawings.
    • Parameterization and customization of application software.
    • Modeling of the governor system in SIMSEN to derive starting parameters for the control loops.
    • Factory and field commissioning testing of the governor product.
    • Technical Interface with key suppliers and other Voith O.U.
  • Making system sizing and working with suppliers to calculate cost estimates in the project proposal phase under the direction of the Offer Project Manager.
  • Provide necessary feedback to Corporate Product Management when requested.
  • Stay current regarding latest Siemens, Schneider Electric & Allen Bradley control system product offerings and work under the Lead Engineer to develop a cost effective hardware design that meets the customer’s requirement.
  • Generate detailed electronic cabinet layout and interconnection drawings and BOM’s, initially for solicitation of bids and subsequently for detailed cabinet construction.
  • Resolve layout and wiring issues with the cabinet vendor that arise during cabinet construction.
  • Coordinate with the customer and lead Factory Acceptance Testing and develop software configurations to support this activity.
  • Provide factory and on-site engineering services to the customer to resolve issues that arise during field install.
  • Provide on-site engineering services to perform or assist commissioning engineers during initial system power-up and system data communications testing.
  • Represents the Voith team at customer kickoff meeting, plant walk-down and design reviews and ensures that appropriate design issues are aired and resolved.


  • Develop project specific software customized from Voith standard software for the Siemens, Schneider Electric or Allen Bradley platforms.
  • Provide documentation unique for each plant to aid future system maintenance.
  • Record all variances using the approved department tools to maintain strict revision control of all software modules.
  • Work with the Software Team Leader to develop software revision control and upgrade strategies for each project.
  • Provide test software and assist Factory Acceptance Testing activity after cabinet assembly is complete.
  • Provide on-site commissioning support during initial system power-up/checkout/subsystem communication tests.
  • Provide on-site commissioning support during generating unit outages to assist electricians in testing I/O wiring and functionality.
  • Provide on-site commissioning support to calibrate and parameterize governor software.  Maintain the variance lists; take part in project status reporting activity (conference calls, written reports, punch list maintenance).
  • Train Customer Plant Operators, maintenance and engineering personnel in the use and maintenance of Voith governor controls.

The preferred candidates for this position will possess a Bachelors Degree in Engineering.  Related work experience with Hydro Automation Control Systems could be acceptable with lesser education.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience digital governor system for hydro power plant control engineering and in power plant control software engineering.
  • Proficient in Drawing Circuit Diagrams in a modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) environment.
  • Basic knowledge of the design and function of PLC based digital control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of control system network design, specifically Ethernet and Profibus.
  • Knowledge of the control processes found in a hydro-electric Power Plant.
  • Bilingual French/English
  • Proficient to an advanced level in MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS-Visio.
  • This position requires travel away from home base from 15-35% of the time during an average year and for periods of up to six weeks for a single assignment.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and take high level supervision and work unsupervised for long periods.
  • Ability to work as part of a team of professional engineers.
  • Above average technical writing skills.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task
