For the Voith Paper, Manufacturing department, we are looking for:

2nd shift Roll Grinder Operator 
Austell, GA 

This is a 2nd shift position (6:00pm to 2:30 am)


JOB PROFILE SUMMARY               

Set up, adjust and operate external roll grinding machines to grind a diversified line of work unusual contours to close and exacting tolerances and finish. May select and dress wheels, select speeds, feeds, and sequences, best suited for type of finish, material characteristics, contour of work, etc. Skill required to align work in machine, dress wheels and allow for operating factors affecting dimensions and finish such as wheel wear, temperature, etc. Readily works from drawings, sketches,  and specifications. Use a variety of precision measuring instruments. Requires a thorough working knowledge of grinding practices and finish requirements. All work is subject to process and final inspection.

  • Maintains a safe work environment and acts in accordance with all general and prescribed occupational safety standards and practices.
  • Possess complete knowledge of company safety rules and regulations and conducts their daily work operations in accordance with these safety requirements. 
  • Conducts periodic safety audits including STOP observations, Pure Safety Modules, and physical inspections as required.   
  • General skills required are the ability to analyze the tasks in advance of conducting them with the eye for assessing potential health risks to employees.  Uses the ABBI principle – (Above, Below, Behind, Inside) for assessing tasks. 
  • Positive attitude with a focus on careful – well thought out planning and preparation.   Will not place production needs ahead of safety performance.
  • Must be a team player, have continuous desire to learn, embraces changes, have a positive safety attitude, is willing to go the extra mile, is willing to accept challenges and be safety conscious. 
  • Conducts all required grinding tasks, in accordance with all general and prescribed repair techniques.
  • Possess complete knowledge of company product line and roll types and characteristics, including roll covers of all types, stainless steel, chilled iron, etc.  A thorough working knowledge of suction rolls and complex hydraulic rolls.
  • Possess legible hand writing skills, possess skill level necessary to competently operate all grinding equipment in the facility. 
  • Follows appropriate work instructions, and maintains accurate records in timely manner.
  • Requires accuracy, a sense of urgency in performing duties, must be able to utilize time management skills so that work balance is achieved, must possess ability to be trained to satisfactorily operate overhead and jib cranes, excellent  mathematical skills, and basic computer skills.  Grinding skill set is broad based and covers many different types of equipment, materials, general grinding practices.  Can readily evaluate grinding tasks and adequately prepares machine set-ups to ensure proper alignment and satisfactory grinding parameters. 
  • Must have excellent eyesight to be able to distinguish small imperfections in roll surface with the naked eye and or with a small magnifier. 
  • Acts with a sense of urgency while ensuring safety
  • Must have very high attention to detail in each element of the grinding specifications such as shape tolerance, TIR, Roundness, etc.  
    • Basic knowledge and understanding of bearing mounting and removal
  • Remove, reinstall customer and/or process bearings of a very wide variety of sizes, types.
  • Must mount straight or tapered fit bearings with or without sleeves using a variety of methods including Hydraulic drive-up to achieve the proper clearance to maintain excellent bearing reliability
  • Requires excellent working knowledge OEM bearing maintenance and repair methods.
  • Proficient user of computer systems including, Grinder CNC control software, Microsoft Office products including Word and XL as well as OEE (overall equipment efficiency)
  • Completely capable of setting up the software parameters in the grinder controls to accomplish complex tasks such as compound crowns, and grooving patterns of all types. 
  • Can accurately and easily access and edit MS Word and XL documents and has working knowledge of computers – especially Fanuc controls, MS Word and XL as well as OEE systems, which allows for timely navigation of views and for recording information electronically.
  • Must have analytical skills and a willingness to learn new systems and not afraid to use PC’s.
  • Accurately and efficiently takes precise and accurate measurements including documentation, computation, and look-up functions. 
  • Successful and accurate completion of grinding worksheets.
  • Micrometer and pi-tape use of a wide range with the ability to measure to the nearest 0.0001 of an inch. 
  • Knows and understands the need to maintain and check calibration of measuring instruments
  • Must execute and drive to complete the work in a timely fashion.
  • Must have a very detail oriented attitude focused on accuracy to ensure that roll surface characteristics and documentation is a correct.
  • Personal drive for excellent and efficient workmanship.



  • Minimum of high school education or equivalent
  • Fork Lift Certified
  • Overhead Crane Operation – Including Jib hoists as well as bridge cranes using complex rigging techniques on components and/or p
  • At least 5 years of previous grinding experience
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Mechanical drawing and specification reading and interpretation
  • Can readily interface with computers and ERP systems as well as MS Word and MS XL



  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Associates Degree in machine shop practices or equivalent
  • Completed course work/training in Bearing installation and maintenance



  • Green Belt – Six-sigma
  • Prior experience working on Paper Machine Rolls preferred. 
  • Familiar with drive – up method for mounting and removal of bearings
